New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Monday stayed the contempt of court proceedings against the National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS), Kolkata, related to the award of an MA in Business Law to a student in a course conducted in collaboration with iPleaders.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela issued a notice to the respondent-student, Kapil Mishra, while suspending the contempt proceedings against the university’s Vice Chancellor.
The case originated from the MA in Business Laws course that NUJS began with iPleaders’ assistance. Mishra enrolled in the course in 2017, but in 2018, NUJS decided to stop or suspend it due to disputes with iPleaders.
In 2019, Mishra approached the Delhi High Court, seeking directions for the issuance of his course completion certificate. The High Court ruled in his favor, instructing the university to take appropriate action.
Subsequently, NUJS requested information and documents from Mishra necessary for issuing the certificate.

According to NUJS, it became evident that Mishra had completed the course after its suspension, and many of the documents he submitted were incomplete, improperly marked, and did not adequately demonstrate course completion.
NUJS then filed a review petition with the High Court, highlighting these concerns, but it was dismissed in October 2024. This prompted the current appeal before the Division Bench.
Meanwhile, Mishra initiated contempt proceedings against NUJS. Senior Advocate Pijush Kanti Roy and Advocate CK Rai represented NUJS in the matter.
Contempt of Court Proceedings are legal actions against people or organizations that do not follow court orders or show disrespect to the court. It can be civil contempt (not obeying court orders) or criminal contempt (disrupting court proceedings or lowering the court’s authority).
