KOLKATA: On 28th February, The Calcutta High Court has granted bail to BJP leader Bikash Singh, who was arrested in connection with alleged violent protests at Sandeshkhali. Singh, along with his lawyer Rajdeep Majumdar, sought the quashing of proceedings against him and prayed for interim bail. Justice Kausik Chanda has confirmed the grant of bail.

Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal has been witnessing protests over allegations of sexual atrocities and land grabbing by some local Trinamool Congress leaders.

Amidst the tensions, West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose expressed concerns, stating-

“The Governor’s job is to see when the elected government takes action within the rule of law. If that is not done, then the governor will intervene.”

Governor Bose commented on the recent developments in Sandeshkhali, highlighting the role of the Governor in ensuring government actions within the rule of law. He also addressed the decision by the Calcutta High Court Chief Justice on Sheikh Shahjahan, emphasizing-

“There is no excuse for not arresting Sheikh Shahjahan, he will be arrested.”

Regarding the Sandeshkhali incident, Union Minister of State (MoS) Nisith Pramanik criticized Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, urging her to seek central government assistance. Pramanik asserted-

“If Mamata is unable to arrest Sheikh Shahjahan, they should seek the help of the central government, which is fully present to support the state.”

The Sandeshkhali violence has led to the arrest of individuals, including Safar Sardar and Bikas Singh, who were produced in the Basirhat Sub-Divisional Court after 14 days in jail custody. The incident involved the vandalization and burning of a poultry farm, houses, and offices.

In response to the allegations, women protestors in Sandeshkhali are seeking justice against alleged atrocities committed by TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan and his aides. The situation has escalated, with accusations of “land-grab and sexually assaulting” under coercion.

Union Minister Nisith Pramanik further emphasized the central government’s readiness to support the state in apprehending the absconding leader, stating-

“We have the capability to find him in an hour and are always ready to support the state in this matter.”

Despite the challenges faced by the fact-finding team, Pramanik reiterated the central government’s commitment to maintaining law and order in the region.
