The web series, scheduled for release on December 25, 2025, has stirred controversy, prompting legal action.
The plea, filed by Dubey’s mother, was mentioned before a Bench of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela. The Court has granted urgent listing of the petition, and it is expected to be heard later today.
Who Was Vikas Dubey?
Vikas Dubey, a gangster from Uttar Pradesh, gained notoriety after allegedly orchestrating the killing of eight police personnel in Kanpur in July 2020. Following his surrender to the Madhya Pradesh Police on July 9, 2020, Dubey was killed the next day while being transported back to Uttar Pradesh.
Authorities claimed that Dubey was shot in self-defense after allegedly attempting to grab a gun and fire at police officers. However, his death sparked widespread allegations of a fake encounter by the Uttar Pradesh Police.
Controversies Surrounding Dubey’s Death
Hours before Dubey’s killing, Mumbai-based lawyer Ghanshyam Upadhyay filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking protection for Dubey, fearing he could be killed in a staged encounter. Unfortunately, Dubey’s death occurred before the plea could be listed for a hearing.
The incident prompted civil rights organizations and lawyers to demand a thorough investigation. The People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) filed an urgent application in a pending Supreme Court matter, urging a probe by a Special Investigation Team (SIT).
Ultimately, the Supreme Court sanctioned an inquiry led by former Supreme Court judge Justice BS Chauhan. While the inquiry committee gave a clean chit to the Uttar Pradesh Police, it recommended action against officials who were known to have patronized Dubey. In July 2022, the Supreme Court directed the public disclosure of the inquiry report and instructed the Uttar Pradesh government to act on the commission’s recommendations.
Controversy Over ‘UP 77’
The upcoming web series ‘UP 77’ aims to portray Dubey’s life and criminal exploits. The petitioner’s counsel argues that the series may cause emotional distress to Dubey’s family and could glorify criminal activities. The court’s decision on whether to halt the release is eagerly awaited by the public.
