In a significant move to ensure accountability and expedite legal proceedings, the Andhra Pradesh High Court has initiated steps to monitor and fast-track cases against Members of Legislative Assemblies (MLAs) and Members of Parliament (MPs). This action aligns with the Supreme Court’s directive to establish special benches in high courts across India for this purpose.
The division bench of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, comprising Justice U. Durga Prasad Rao and Justice M. Kiranmayi, has taken up the matter. They have scheduled further proceedings, demonstrating the court’s commitment to addressing these cases promptly. The special bench is responsible for compiling a list of all pending cases against public representatives and issuing necessary orders for their resolution.
This initiative is part of a broader effort, as similar special benches have been established in the High Courts of Telangana, Punjab, and Haryana. The formation of these benches is a response to the Supreme Court’s instructions in the case of Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay v. Union Of India and others, emphasizing the judiciary’s role in ensuring the swift and effective administration of justice in cases involving elected officials.
The move by the Andhra Pradesh High Court and other high courts across the country marks a crucial step in addressing the backlog of cases against lawmakers. It reflects a growing recognition of the need for judicial systems to adapt and respond swiftly to legal challenges involving public representatives, thereby upholding the principles of justice and accountability in the political and legal spheres.
