Calcutta High Court

KOLKATA: Days after Tollywood actor and Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Soham Chakraborty allegedly slapped a restaurant owner in Kolkata, the businessman, identified as Mr. Alam, has moved the Calcutta High Court to “seek justice.” Alam claims that since the incident, the legislator has been continuously threatening him and his associates.

On Wednesday(on 12th June), a single bench headed by Justice Amrita Sinha admitted Alam’s petition. The court has scheduled the next hearing in the case for Friday.

In his petition, Alam detailed the events of the alleged assault and the subsequent threats he has received from Chakraborty.

Alam stated-

“I have filed a petition in the High Court seeking justice.”

emphasizing his frustration with the police’s inaction. Despite lodging a written complaint, Alam claims that no measures have been taken against the MLA. He expressed his concerns about the influence and power wielded by the actor-turned-politician, which he believes is hindering the investigation.

According to Alam, the incident occurred on June 7 when he confronted the MLA over a dispute at his restaurant. This confrontation allegedly led to Chakraborty slapping him. Following the altercation, Alam claims he has been subjected to ongoing intimidation from the MLA and his associates.

“I have filed a petition in the High Court seeking justice.”

-Alam told reporters.

Alam’s plea to the Calcutta High Court is aimed at ensuring that justice is served and that there is accountability for the actions of those in positions of power. He mentioned that despite the clear evidence and a formal complaint, the police have not taken any steps to address the situation.

“I am compelled to seek legal recourse as the local authorities have failed to act,”

-Alam added.

Justice Amrita Sinha’s decision to admit the petition is seen as a significant development in the case. The upcoming hearing on Friday is expected to shed more light on the allegations and the actions taken by the authorities since the complaint was filed.

The incident has sparked considerable attention, raising questions about the conduct of public figures and the challenges faced by ordinary citizens in seeking justice against influential individuals. Alam’s case underscores the broader issue of accountability and the role of the judiciary in upholding the rule of law.

A recent altercation involving TMC MLA from Chandipur, Sujit Chakraborty, and a restaurant staff member, Alam, has raised significant attention and controversy. The incident, which occurred last Friday in Kolkata’s New Town area, reportedly stemmed from allegations of verbal misconduct against TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee.

According to eyewitnesses and initial police reports, the incident began when Chakraborty parked his car outside a popular restaurant, causing inconvenience to other customers. Alam, a staff member at the restaurant, approached Chakraborty’s security personnel and requested them to move the vehicle. This request led to an altercation.

Chakraborty, who was at the restaurant for a shoot, allegedly reacted aggressively to Alam’s request. The situation escalated quickly when Chakraborty accused Alam of using “bad words” against Abhishek Banerjee. Following this accusation, Chakraborty allegedly slapped Alam in a fit of rage.

Alam immediately denied the accusations made by Chakraborty, calling them “baseless.” Distressed by the physical assault, he filed a formal complaint at the Techno City Police Station in Kolkata. In his complaint, Alam detailed the sequence of events and the unprovoked nature of the assault.

Chakraborty, on the other hand, expressed remorse for his actions.

In a public statement following the incident, he said-

“Given the failure of local authorities to take action, I am left with no choice but to seek legal recourse.”

The police have registered Alam’s complaint and are investigating the incident. Preliminary reports suggest that the altercation was indeed sparked by the parking inconvenience and the subsequent exchange of words between Alam and Chakraborty’s security personnel.
