Today, On 1st Aug, The Bombay High Court informed that a total of 466 cases are pending against both former and sitting Members of Parliament (MPs) and Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) across Maharashtra and Goa.
Mumbai: The Bombay High Court has been informed about the backlog of 466 pending cases against current and former Members of Parliament (MPs) and Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) across Maharashtra and Goa.
This information presented to a division bench consisting of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyay and Justice Nijamoodin Jamadar.

According to the detailed data submitted, the Aurangabad region has the highest number of pending cases, totalling 110. This is followed by the Bombay region with 250 cases, the Nagpur region with 75 cases, and the Union Territories of Daman Diu, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, and Silvassa collectively having 11 cases. In Goa, there are 20 cases pending against MPs and MLAs.
Chief Justice Upadhyay remarked on the gravity of the situation, stating that,
“He will be issuing a crucial order to address the backlog. This order will direct all lower courts to expedite the trials of these cases and will instruct the High Court to prioritize the disposal of cases where the trial has been stayed.”
He emphasized the importance of expediting these trials to ensure justice is served without undue delay.
Chief Justice Upadhyay’s statement highlights the judiciary’s commitment to addressing the significant number of pending cases involving legislators, which is crucial for maintaining public trust in the legal system.
His directive aims to streamline the judicial process and reduce the backlog, ensuring that legal proceedings against public representatives conducted efficiently and transparently.
