Families of victims of the 2008 Malegaon blast have moved the Bombay High Court against the special NIA court’s order acquitting Pragya Singh Thakur, Lt Col Prasad Purohit and others. The appeal seeks to overturn the judgment that cleared all accused except one convicted under the Arms Act.

Mumbai: Families of the victims of the 2008 Malegaon blast have now approached the Bombay High Court, challenging the special NIA court’s judgment that had acquitted BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur, Lt Col Prasad Purohit, and five others in the case.

The blast, which happened on 29 September 2008 near a mosque during the holy month of Ramzan, killed six people and left over 100 injured.

It was one of the first terror cases where investigators had initially linked the alleged involvement of Hindu extremist groups, which sparked major political and social debates at that time.

According to reports, a criminal revision application has been filed on behalf of those injured in the blast. The petitioners are seeking to overturn the special court’s ruling and hold the acquitted accused responsible.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) had taken over the probe in 2011. At first, the NIA had opposed the discharge of the accused, but later the agency gave a clean chit to some of them, including Pragya Singh Thakur, saying there was a “lack of prosecutable evidence.”

In April 2024, the special NIA court acquitted all seven accused in the case, including Thakur and Purohit, and convicted only one person, Pravin Takalki, under the Arms Act.

Now, six family members of those who died in the Malegaon blast have filed an appeal before the Bombay High Court.

The appeal was filed on Monday by Nisar Ahmed Sayyed Bilal and five others through their lawyer Mateen Shaikh. They have requested the High Court to “quash the special court judgment.”
