Today ( 21st March) CJI Chandrachud said, “We’ve opened an accessibility help desk; this is in continuation of our mission, which began with the submission of our report by the committee chaired by Justice Ravindra Bhatt.”

NEW DELHI: Today (21st March): Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, inaugurated the “Accessibility Help Desk” and “Media Enclosure” at the Supreme Court Complex in New Delhi, aiming to enhance accessibility for all individuals.

This initiative comes from the recommendations put forth by a committee chaired by Justice Ravindra Bhatt, focusing on catering not only to differently-abled individuals but also to senior citizens, pregnant women, and others in need of special assistance.

During the inauguration, CJI Chandrachud emphasized the significance of establishing a centralized facility where all necessary services are readily accessible. He assured that this initiative is just the beginning, with further recommendations from the committee set to be implemented to ensure comprehensive accessibility within the Supreme Court premises.

“Now, we have a one-stop facility where all the services will be available. This is just the beginning, we are implementing the other recommendations made by the committee, which consists of experts and stakeholders,” CJI said.

Expressing concern over the lack of seating arrangements for camerapersons covering court proceedings, the CJI highlighted the importance of providing suitable facilities for media personnel. He envisioned the media enclosure as a welcome addition for journalists covering matters of public interest, offering them a comfortable workspace shielded from environmental elements.

“I hope that this will be a much-needed welcome facility for the media. We have a large contingent of the media that reports the proceedings of the Supreme Court, which are matters of public interest,” the CJI said.

“I was always worried about the fact that the camerapersons have no place to sit. I hope this will be a special facility where all of you can sit and do your work without being exposed to the elements like the heat of the summer or rain,” he added.

In November last year, Chief Justice Chandrachud inaugurated Mitti Cafe, run by an NGO on the Supreme Court premises in the national capital. The cafe is completely run by specially-abled staff.
