CJI Chandrachud: "Five Minutes, Once Every 5 Years, For Our Nation"

NEW DELHI: On Friday(19th April), Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud expressed his enthusiasm and deep sense of patriotism when he voted for the first time. He urged all citizens of the country not to miss the opportunity to vote responsibly, emphasizing the significance of participating in the democratic process.

The CJI’s remarks came in a video shared by the national broadcaster Doordarshan, as part of their campaign “Chunav ka parv desh ka garv.”

“When I voted for the first time, the feeling of getting the ink mark on my finger made me really proud to be part of my country.”

He further added-

“The mark of ink was something I wished would endure, signifying my pride as an Indian citizen who had come of age to participate in the democratic process.”

CJI Chandrachud expressed that the day of elections always evokes wonderful emotions within him.

“The recognition that each person, waiting patiently in the voting queue, possesses equal significance as a citizen, embodies the core essence and vitality of our constitutional democracy.”

The CJI also highlighted that he has never neglected his duty and obligation to cast his vote.

Reflecting on his experiences as a lawyer seeking work in different cities, including Mumbai, CJI Chandrachud admitted to always carrying the concern of not missing the important day to cast his vote.

“I’ve consistently honored my duty as an Indian citizen. I urge each one of you not to overlook this chance to vote responsibly, showcasing our pride as citizens of our beloved country.”

CJI Chandrachud summarized the significance of voting by stating-

“Five minutes, once every five years, for our nation. Let’s vote proudly.”

Doordarshan shared the video on the day when 102 seats across 21 states and Union Territories took part in Phase 1 of the 18th Lok Sabha elections, echoing the message of voting and civic duty.

With a voter turnout of approximately 60.03% in the first phase, the country witnessed citizens actively engaging in the democratic process. However, the phase 1 elections also experienced sporadic incidents of violence in Manipur and West Bengal.

The counting of votes for the elections is scheduled to take place on June 4.
