Tirupati: Recently, Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud has emphasized the importance of unraveling and digitizing these invaluable resources. During his visit to the Sri Venkateswara Vedic University (SVVU) campus in Tirupati, the Chief Justice explored the university’s library, which houses thousands of ancient palm leaf manuscripts.
Recognizing the need to make this treasure trove of knowledge accessible to future generations, he applauded the joint efforts of the SVVU and Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) in their unique ‘Palm Leaf Edicts Digitization Project.’
Chief Justice Chandrachud expressed his delight at the preservation efforts undertaken by the SVVU and TTD to immortalize these precious manuscripts. He highlighted the significance of safeguarding the nation’s ancient wisdom, which was authored by sages and saints over several thousands of years.
The manuscripts encompass a wide range of subjects, including the Vedas, Agamas, Puranas, Nyaya, and Darshanas. Of particular interest to the Chief Justice were the manuscripts on ‘Nyaya Shastra,’ shedding light on legal systems and legal education.

While commending the TTD for its establishment of the Sri Venkateswara Vedic University and the digitization project, Chief Justice Chandrachud called for a national mission dedicated to the preservation and digitization of ancient palm leaf edicts. He emphasized the need for research and publication to ensure the dissemination of knowledge for the common good. By digitizing these manuscripts, they can be made accessible to researchers, scholars, and future generations, bridging the gap between ancient wisdom and modern knowledge.

During his visit, Chief Justice Chandrachud had the opportunity to witness firsthand the unique endeavor of the Palm Leaf Edicts Digitization Project. The project aims to preserve these invaluable manuscripts using modern technology while ensuring their content remains intact. The Chief Justice’s visit to the university’s library allowed him to explore ancient texts on various subjects, gaining insights into the profound wisdom contained within them.
Chief Justice Chandrachud expressed his appreciation for the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) and their commitment to the preservation of ancient manuscripts. The establishment of the Sri Venkateswara Vedic University and the digitization project received his praise for their significant contributions to the cause. The Chief Justice also expressed his happiness at witnessing the recitation of Veda mantras during his visit, acknowledging the spiritual and cultural significance of these ancient texts.
Prior to his exploration of the ancient manuscripts, Chief Justice Chandrachud, accompanied by AP High Court Chief Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur, visited the Srivari Temple in Tirumala.
Welcomed by the archakas, they offered prayers and received Aseervachanam from Veda pundits at the Ranganayakula Mandapam. As a token of reverence, the Chief Justice received sacred offerings, including a Srivari portrait, Thirtha Prasadam, TTD diary, calendars, and Panchgavya products.
