The arrest had taken place on February 11, when police apprehended him at his South Kolkata residence, citing his alleged involvement in violent protests in the restive North 24 Parganas district. The charges against Sardar, as mentioned in the FIR filed at the Sandeshkhali police station, include sections under the Indian Penal Code related to rioting, theft, conspiracy, and even the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
Justice Debangsu Basak, presiding over a division bench, made the decision to grant bail after reviewing a petition filed by Sardar. This move comes after the former CPI(M) MLA, who secured victory in the 2011 assembly elections representing Sandeshkhali, had been in judicial remand.
The situation has sparked discussions about the circumstances surrounding the arrest and subsequent legal proceedings. Sardar’s release on bail marks a turning point in the ongoing legal proceedings, and the decision by Justice Basak underscores the court’s consideration of the presented petition.
Quoting Sardar’s legal representation-
“We are pleased with the court’s decision to grant bail, emphasizing our belief in the fair judicial process. This allows our client to resume regular activities and engage in his legal defense with renewed vigor.”
The arrest and subsequent legal proceedings had been closely watched, with supporters of the former CPI(M) MLA expressing concerns about the nature of the charges. As the case progresses, further developments are anticipated in the Sandeshkhali protest case.
