NEW DELHI: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal faced recent arrest and subsequent custody under the Enforcement Directorate (ED) regarding the contentious Delhi liquor policy case.
Kejriwal, who has been a prominent figure in Indian politics, known for his anti-corruption case, expressed his astonishment over the speedy actions taken by the ED.
He revealed:
“I had not foreseen my arrest occurring at such an early stage.”
The Chief Minister’s arrest came unexpectedly, especially considering his own anticipation of a grace period before any legal action would be taken.

Kejriwal was arrested soon after the Delhi High Court denied him interim protection. He mentioned that he couldn’t seek blessings from his parents before the ED took him away, as he was with them when they arrived.
Kejriwal noted the professionalism of the ED officers, stating:
“The Enforcement Directorate officers treated me respectfully and professionally.”
Furthermore, Kejriwal pointed out the complexity of the liquor policy approval process, which involved multiple levels of scrutiny and approval.
“The policy passed through several levels of approval, with signatures from the Law Secretary, Finance Secretary, and the Lieutenant Governor. I don’t get why only Kejriwal and Sisodia are being blamed.”
– he argued, questioning the focus of the investigation solely on him and his deputy, Manish Sisodia.
In the courtroom, the narrative of the Enforcement Directorate labeled Kejriwal as the “kingpin and key conspirator” behind the alleged “Delhi Excise Scam.”

As per the Enforcement Directorate, the scheme was allegedly coordinated “in collaboration with Ministers of the Delhi government, AAP leaders, and other individuals.” The agency leveled accusations against Kejriwal and his associates, asserting that they devised a defunct excise policy that purportedly provided undue advantages to specific individuals and entailed solicitation for illicit payments.
