FASTag users must prepare for new regulations set by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), effective February 17, 2025
NEW DELHI: In a major update for FASTag users, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has introduced new regulations for toll tax collection that will come into effect from Today (February 17, 2025) .
These revised rules are designed to improve the efficiency and smoothness of toll payments for commuters, but failure to comply could result in paying double the toll fee. Here is an overview of the key changes and what users need to know to avoid penalties.
What Is FASTag?
FASTag is an electronic toll collection system that uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. It allows vehicles to pass through toll plazas seamlessly by automatically deducting the toll fee from a linked bank or prepaid account. This cashless system helps reduce traffic congestion at toll booths and ensures efficient toll payments.
Will FASTag Payments Be Rejected?
According to an official NPCI circular dated January 28, 2025, FASTag payments will be rejected under the following conditions:
- If the FASTag was blacklisted within one hour before it was scanned at the toll plaza, or within ten minutes after the scan.
- If the FASTag has insufficient balance or has been blocked for any reason.
In these scenarios, vehicle owners will face a penalty, as they will be required to pay double the toll fee. It’s crucial for users to ensure that their FASTag is in good standing before approaching the toll plaza.
Key FASTag Changes
- Blacklisted FASTags: Payments Will Be Declined
Under the updated guidelines, toll payments will be rejected if the FASTag is blacklisted at the time of scanning. If the tag was blacklisted at least 10 minutes before reaching the toll plaza, the transaction will not be processed. This rule is set to reduce payment issues and ensure only valid FASTags are used for toll transactions.
- Grace Period for Rectifying FASTag Status
To prevent rejections, users will have a 70-minute window to rectify their FASTag status before reaching the toll booth. This will allow users to address any issues, such as insufficient balance or expired tags, without facing penalties.
- Blacklisting Impact and Penalties
If a FASTag is blacklisted and the toll payment is processed, users may have to pay double the toll charges. However, if the FASTag is recharged within 10 minutes after scanning, users can request a penalty refund.
- Delayed Transactions and Additional Charges
If a toll transaction is processed more than 15 minutes after the vehicle passes the toll reader, users may face additional charges. It is important to monitor transaction times to avoid delays in toll fee deductions.
- Chargebacks and Cooling Period
Chargeback requests can be raised by banks for incorrect deductions resulting from blacklisted or low-balance FASTags, but only after a 15-day cooling period. This will ensure that disputes are settled in a fair and timely manner.

Reasons for FASTag Blacklisting
A FASTag may be blacklisted for several reasons, including:
- Insufficient balance in the user’s FASTag account.
- Non-payment of toll tax.
- Payment failures due to technical glitches or connectivity issues.
- Failure to update KYC (Know Your Customer) details.
- Discrepancies in the vehicle’s chassis number or registration number.
Essential Tips for FASTag Users
To avoid facing issues at toll plazas and ensure a smooth, hassle-free experience, FASTag users should:
- Maintain sufficient balance in their FASTag wallet at all times.
- Ensure a minimum balance of Rs. 100 to prevent blacklisting.
- Pay attention to SMS alerts and notifications from their bank regarding balance and status.
- Regularly check FASTag balance and status using the MyFASTag app.
- Enable the auto-recharge feature for automatic balance updates and uninterrupted toll payments.
- Keep their registered mobile number updated to receive important alerts.
- Properly affix the FASTag sticker on the vehicle’s windshield to avoid scanning issues.
- Use only one FASTag per vehicle to prevent complications at toll plazas.
