The Supreme Court refused to interfere with its earlier judgment cancelling over 23,000 West Bengal SSC appointments, asking affected candidates to approach the Calcutta High Court. The Court reiterated that only untainted candidates may seek limited relief while ensuring “tainted candidates” do not re-enter the system.
Today, On 3rd April, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said she “can’t accept the Supreme Court’s judgment” on the teacher recruitment case but promised to follow it. The court canceled thousands of job appointments and ordered a fresh hiring process. Banerjee disagreed with the decision but assured that a new recruitment drive will take place. Her statement comes after a big legal setback for her government in this matter.
The Calcutta High Court declined bail to Partha Chatterjee and four others in the SSC scam case. Last month, a two-judge division bench of the High Court delivered a split verdict on their bail pleas. After the split decision, the case was referred to a larger bench for consideration. With this ruling, all the accused will remain in custody as the investigation progresses.

Today, On 17th October, the Supreme Court directed Trinamool Congress leader Kuntal Ghosh to seek bail from the Calcutta High Court regarding the school jobs-for-cash scam. Ghosh, arrested by the ED in January 2022, faces allegations of illegal payments for job appointments in West Bengal’s 2016 recruitment process. The High Court is instructed to expedite the hearing.
