Today(on 30th August),The Delhi High Court denied interim bail to Popular Front of India (PFI) leader OMA Salam, who was arrested under the UAPA. The bench, comprising Justices Prathiba M Singh and Amit Sharma, ruled that Salam’s plea did not justify the granting of interim bail.
The Delhi High Court on 27th May, denied bail to Abubacker E., former Chairman of the Popular Front of India (PFI), under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act being investigated by the NIA. The court found substantial evidence of PFI’s plan to establish Islamic law by 2047, overthrowing the constitutional government. Abubacker’s plea for medical grounds was also rejected. PFI and its affiliates were banned under UAPA by the Central Government on 28th September 2022, and the Apex Court declined to intervene in the matter on 6th November 2023.
Today, 6th May, The Delhi High Court ordered the release of Amit Chakraborty, HR Head of NewsClick, in a UAPA case, following his decision to become an approver. The case involves allegations of receiving funds from China. This ruling reflects the complexity and controversy of UAPA-related cases in India, impacting press freedom and anti-terror laws.
Today (May 3): The Delhi High Court reserved its order on the bail plea of NewsClick’s HR head under the UAPA. The charges allege receipt of funds for pro-China propaganda. Chakravarty’s counsel cited turning approver and requested bail under section 482 of the CrPC. The court awaits the decision amidst the ongoing case scrutiny.
