Today, On 10th November, Chief Justice BR Gavai, during a contempt hearing in the N. Peddi Raju case, condemned the rising trend of scandalous allegations against judges over unfavourable rulings, stressing that such scurrilous attacks on the judiciary must be strongly deprecated.
The Supreme Court, led by CJI B.R. Gavai, closed the contempt case against a lawyer and litigant who made scandalous allegations against Telangana High Court Judge Justice Moushumi Bhattacharya, after their apology was accepted. The bench reminded that “Majesty of law lies in forgiving,” while cautioning lawyers against filing petitions with baseless accusations.
The Punjab and Haryana High Court pulled up an Assistant District Attorney for hiding her relationship with the accused while appearing as State counsel in a sexual harassment case against her husband. The Court called out the conduct of both husband and wife as an attempt to misuse the judicial process.
A litigant and two advocates apologised to Justice Moushumi Bhattacharya after the Supreme Court directed them for making “scurrilous and scandalous” remarks. The SC reminded that “judges of high courts are in no way inferior to judges of the Supreme Court.”
