NEW DELHI: A defamation case against journalists of Times of India (ToI) and Economic Times (ET) has been quashed by the Supreme Court. Earlier, the Karnataka High Court dismissed the case against Bennett Coleman & Co. (the publisher of ToI). However, it refused to dismiss the case against individual journalists, leaving them to face legal proceedings.
The Gujarat High Court stayed proceedings against Times of India and Indian Express based on a Supreme Court order. The High Court criticized TOI for misrepresenting the situation, claiming contempt proceedings. The Court dropped contempt proceedings against the editor of Divya Bhaskar after an unconditional apology. The newspapers were criticized for sensationalizing court proceedings.

Today, On 13th July, The Gujarat High Court criticized The Times of India and Indian Express for “false and distorted” reporting, stating that their use of the Court’s observations in headlines could mislead the public. The Court issued notices to the editors and demanded explanations for this misrepresentation. The media’s reporting on court proceedings was deemed misleading and potentially damaging.
