The Madras High Court has directed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the Karur TVK rally stampede that killed 41 people. Earlier, the Madurai bench had refused a CBI investigation, citing the State probe was still in early stages.
TVK leaders Bussy Anand and CT Nirmal Kumar, named in the Karur stampede FIR that killed 41, told the Madras High Court allegations against them are “false” and “politically motivated.” Police, however, blame TVK’s mismanagement for the tragedy.
The Madras High Court urged the Tamil Nadu government to consider establishing an open-air jail exclusively for women. This proposal aims to provide a conducive and rehabilitative environment for female inmates, mirroring the benefits offered to male prisoners. The court’s directive came during the hearing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) challenging the existing rules.
