Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar has filed a writ petition in the Calcutta High Court, alleging repeated “illegal and arbitrary detentions” by West Bengal authorities and seeking judicial protection against violations of his constitutional rights.
Wazahat Khan, arrested in Kolkata for allegedly spreading hate online, was previously involved in the arrest of influencer Sharmistha Panoli. He evaded capture for ten days but was eventually apprehended amid political controversy surrounding his case. Both face allegations tied to social media hate speech, igniting criticism of the West Bengal government.
Yesterday, On 12th June, The Calcutta High Court has ordered the deployment of central forces in West Bengal until June 21 to address post-election violence concerns. The state government must provide a report on measures taken by June 14. The court emphasized cooperation between state police and central forces and scheduled a next hearing for June 18. BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari welcomed the order.
The Supreme Court intervened by halting notices issued by the Lok Sabha Secretariat after a BJP MP filed a complaint of “misconduct” against West Bengal officials. The complaint stemmed from clashes between BJP workers, police, and Sandeshkhali residents. The Court stayed the notices and summoned responses within four weeks, suspending proceedings in the lower House panel.
