The Election Commission told the Supreme Court it is working under “sharp political hostility” where nearly every decision faces challenges, while defending its Bihar voter roll revision. The SC has directed greater transparency, including publishing deleted voter names with reasons.
The Supreme Court addressed the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Bihar, stating, “West Bengal can wait for the time being.” The court chose to focus on Bihar’s voter list issues ahead of elections, delaying West Bengal.
DMK strongly criticized the Election Commission of India over mass voter deletions during the Bihar SIR exercise. The party alleged, “ECI is collaborating with BJP to compromise free and fair elections,” raising serious concerns nationwide.
Today, On 13th August, During Bihar SIR hearing in the Supreme Court, Advocate Prashant Bhushan alleged that the Election Commission of India removed the search provision from voter rolls immediately after Rahul Gandhi’s press conference, claiming vote theft, raising serious concerns over electoral transparency and fairness.
The Election Commission told the Supreme Court that no voter’s name will be removed from Bihar’s draft electoral roll without prior notice, a chance to be heard, and a reasoned order. The assurance comes amid challenges to the Special Intensive Revision ahead of state elections.
Today, On 6th August, Supreme Court tells ECI to submit a detailed reply by August 10 on deletion of 65 lakh names from Bihar draft voter list, saying, “We will ensure every affected voter is heard and considered.”
