The Madras High Court declined to alter the police-allotted dates for Vinayagar idol-immersion processions after the VHP sought a Sunday slot already given to the Hindu Munnani. Justice V Lakshminarayanan called it a ‘game of one-upmanship’ between two groups of the same ideological grouping, questioned whether procession scheduling warranted interference under Article 226, and deferred to the police on law-and-order arrangements. The VHP was told to apply earlier next year or coordinate with the other organisation.
