Calcutta High Court to hear convict Sanjay Roy’s appeal against life sentence in RG Kar rape-murder case. CBI seeks death penalty, calling it a “rarest of rare” crime.
New Delhi: The father of the victim in the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case has voiced concerns about the ongoing investigation. He has alleged that multiple individuals are involved in both the crime and the tampering of crucial evidence. Speaking to ANI, the victim’s father revealed that his family has filed a petition in the High Court, submitting 54 questions in an effort to secure justice for his daughter.
A Kolkata court criticized police and RG Kar Medical College for mishandling a rape and murder case. Despite these lapses, Sanjay Roy was sentenced to life imprisonment. The court ruled out the death penalty, emphasizing the need for justice grounded in evidence and legal principles rather than public sentiment.
Kolkata: The verdict in the rape and murder case of an on-duty doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, which occurred in August last year, is set to be delivered on January 18 by the designated judge of the Sealdah court, according to a PTI report.
Today, On 13th December, Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College, was granted bail in a case involving the rape and murder of a doctor but remains in custody for a separate financial irregularities investigation. Allegations against Ghosh included evidence tampering, while Mondal was charged with delaying the FIR. The case ignited nationwide protests for better safety and justice for medical workers.
The Supreme Court on Monday (3rd Nov) acquitted a man convicted of rape and murder, citing inadequate legal representation during trial. The Bench criticized the trial court’s failure to follow procedural safeguards and highlighted the shocking imposition of the death penalty. The Court issued guidelines to ensure proper legal aid and fair trials for accused individuals.
Yesterday, On 12th November, two witnesses testified in the RG Kar case involving the rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor, marking progress in the ongoing trial. The investigation has prompted widespread protests among junior doctors demanding accountability and stricter safety regulations in medical institutions. The case has been transferred to the CBI for further inquiry.
Today, On 1st October, junior doctors at R.G. Kar Medical College resumed their strike over the slow CBI investigation into a rape-murder case and the Supreme Court’s delays. They seek urgent action, improved safety measures, and expanded demands, highlighting a lack of governmental responsiveness and the need for genuine healthcare reform.
On Wednesday(18th Sept), the West Bengal Medical Council canceled Sandip Ghosh’s medical registration due to his involvement in a CBI investigation into a junior doctor’s rape and murder. Meanwhile, Kolkata Police suspended Inspector Abhijit Mondal, who is also in CBI custody for tampering with evidence and obstructing the investigation.
Today(17th Sept), Veteran lawyer Indira Jaising will represent the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Forum in the Supreme Court hearing of the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case. She takes over from senior advocate Geeta Luthra, with her consent, amid ongoing protests by junior doctors.
