Today, on 16th January, The Supreme Court excluded Punjab and Haryana from its December 8, 2025 directions as only voter lists were finalized, holding that 30% women’s reservation will apply to their upcoming Bar Council elections. The matter was heard by CJI Surya Kant and Justice J Bagchi.

Supreme Court Criticises Punjab and Haryana Bar Council Over Bar Election Disputes

The Supreme Court of India criticized the Bar Council’s unclear position on Karnal and Rohtak bar elections, ordering urgent High Court hearings. It granted interim relief to lawyers involved in cases of electoral irregularities, emphasizing the need for transparency and proper procedures in future elections. The Court also called for a retired judge’s supervision.
