The Supreme Court will hear NHAI’s review plea challenging the retrospective application of its 2019 land compensation verdict that could cost Rs 32,000 crore. The Bench of Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan has listed the case for open court hearing on November 11, 2025.
Justice Sanjeev Khanna today recused himself from hearing a review petition on same-sex marriage, leading to the reconstitution of a five-judge constitutional bench by CJI DY Chandrachud. The Supreme Court deferred the hearing, and it was clarified that review petitions are decided in chambers, with no open court hearing. The original judgment denied marriage rights to queer couples.
Today(on 9th July), Petitioners sought an open court hearing before a three-judge bench, led by CJI Chandrachud, to review the denial of marriage equality to the queer community by the Supreme Court. The petition challenges the Supreme Court’s decision against legalizing same-sex marriage in India, emphasizing the fundamental right to marry for all individuals, regardless of sexual orientation.
The Supreme Court will review 13 petitions challenging the 2023 verdict on same-sex marriage in India. A specially constituted five-judge bench, including Chief Justice Chandrachud, will consider the petitions. The review aims for a more inclusive interpretation of marriage laws to encompass same-sex couples. Justices Khanna and Nagarathna have replaced retired Justices Kaul and Bhat.
