A committee has been formed to investigate cracks in villages of Uttarakhand’s Bageshwar district, allegedly due to illegal soapstone mining. This action follows the Uttarakhand High Court’s directive for an on-site inspection and a report within two weeks.
New Delhi, Feb 27: The Supreme Court has decided not to interfere with the Madhya Pradesh High Court’s order on moving toxic waste from the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy site to Pithampur in Dhar district for disposal. The apex court also refused to stop the trial run scheduled for Thursday to dispose of the hazardous material.
The Supreme Court criticized the National Green Tribunal for imposing a Rs. 25 crore penalty on Benzo Chem Industrial Private Limited based on revenue without evidence of environmental violations. Justices emphasized that penalty determination must align with legal principles, stressing revenue should not influence penalties and highlighting violations of natural justice in the NGT’s decision.
