The Supreme Court has ordered a countrywide review of private universities after Amity University allegedly harassed a student for changing her name. The move aims to ensure transparency, accountability, and proper regulation in private higher education.
Allahabad: The Allahabad High Court has ruled that every person in India has the fundamental right to choose or change their name. The court said this right is protected under the Indian Constitution.A man named Sameer Rao had filed a petition in the court, asking for his name to be changed from “Shahnawaz” to “Md Sameer Rao” in his school records. According to a report by media, his request was earlier rejected by the Uttar Pradesh Board of Secondary Education.
Puja Khedkar, a former IAS trainee, is seeking the exclusion of seven out of her twelve attempts at the Civil Services exam due to a disability, prompting a legal battle. The controversy also involves allegations of falsified disability claims and identity fraud, which led to the UPSC revoking her selection. The case is ongoing in the Delhi High Court.

It ordered the CBSE to issue new marksheets for Classes 10 and 12 with the correct name of the petitioner’s father, recognizing the importance of accurate identity.
