NALSA has launched a “Planecrash legal support helpdesk” in response to the Air India crash in Ahmedabad, providing legal aid and emotional support to affected families. Guided by Chief Justice B R Gavai and Justice Surya Kant, the initiative addresses legal formalities and offers mental health assistance to help families cope with their loss.
R S Gavai, father of CJI-designate B R Gavai, was an Ambedkarite leader, ex-MP, and Governor of Kerala and Bihar. Justice Gavai has acknowledged his father’s decades-long association with the Congress party in public statements.
CJI-designate BR Gavai said “Supreme Court can’t be aloof when the country is in danger,”. Supporting the India-Pakistan ceasefire, he noted that war helps no one, citing conflicts in Russia-Ukraine and Israel-Gaza as examples.
The Second National Lok Adalat of 2025 will take place on May 10 across 28 states and Union Territories, under the leadership of Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and CJI-designate Justice BR Gavai.
New Delhi – 5th May: The Supreme Court of India on Monday asked the Central Government and 18 states to respond to a petition filed by the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA). The petition requested the release of elderly prisoners aged above 70 and terminally ill inmates on bail, especially those who have not approached the top court for relief after their bail pleas were denied.
