NEW DELHI: 13th May: The Supreme Court of India on Tuesday dismissed a petition that had requested a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into the recent communal clashes that took place in Murshidabad, West Bengal. These clashes occurred during protests related to the Waqf (Amendment) Act.
Mamata Banerjee has launched a fierce attack on the BJP, accusing it of inciting communal tensions and violence linked to the Waqf Bill and recent clashes in Murshidabad. With assembly elections looming, she asserts the TMC will not implement the controversial law. Banerjee emphasizes the BJP’s alleged role in unrest and highlights national security concerns.
The Calcutta High Court permitted BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari to visit Murshidabad, following recent violence related to the Waqf Act, but mandated he inform the local Superintendent of Police beforehand. The Court forbade any rallies or public speeches during the visit to maintain peace, amid opposition from the West Bengal government.
The Supreme Court of India directed Advocate Vishal Tiwari to withdraw his petition concerning violence in Murshidabad related to the Waqf Amendment Act and to file a new one with clear facts. Justice Surya Kant emphasized the need for honesty and suggested Tiwari present the issue more factually and responsibly.
The West Bengal government stated in court that the law and order in Murshidabad is under control despite recent riots, prompting opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari to request an NIA investigation. Additional police deployment and efforts for resettlement of displaced residents were discussed, while the Supreme Court is also urged to intervene and ensure a thorough investigation.
Today, On 15th April, Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath slammed West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee over the Murshidabad violence, saying “Bengal is burning, and the CM is silent.” He praised the Calcutta High Court for taking swift action by ordering the deployment of central forces.
