In the shoe-hurling incident targeting CJI B.R. Gavai, the Supreme Court said it is “not against free speech, but not at the cost of others’ dignity,” warning that unregulated social media is turning into a dangerous, money-spinning venture.
Today, On 7th October, CJI Gavai flagged concerns over social media coverage of court proceedings during the Judges Association case. He warned, “Otherwise your clients will be offended,” highlighting the need to restrict reporting to protect the dignity of ongoing judicial matters.
The J&K High Court closed contempt proceedings against The Hindu and ETV Bharat after their apology for a false report on Justice Atul Sreedharan’s roster change. The Court, however, warned media to avoid inaccurate or misleading judicial reporting.

NEW DELHI: A defamation case against journalists of Times of India (ToI) and Economic Times (ET) has been quashed by the Supreme Court. Earlier, the Karnataka High Court dismissed the case against Bennett Coleman & Co. (the publisher of ToI). However, it refused to dismiss the case against individual journalists, leaving them to face legal proceedings.
Madras: The Madras High Court directed the Tamil magazine Junior Vikatan to pay Rs 25 lakh as compensation to Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader TR Baalu. The Court found that the magazine had published defamatory and false news against him without verifying facts. The ruling was passed by Justice AA Nakkiran on February 4, 2025.

Media outlets are ordered to remove related content. Legal hearings are scheduled for November, as both Rama Rao and actor Nagarjuna pursue separate defamation cases against Surekha.
