The Supreme Court stayed a Rajasthan High Court order allowing parents of an inter-caste married woman to meet her, after the couple expressed fears of honour killing and threats from her family following their marriage.
The Madras High Court held that a wife’s police complaint against husband or matrimonial family cannot alone amount to mental cruelty unless proven false or malicious. The Court dismissed husband’s divorce plea, protecting a spouse’s right to seek legal remedies.
The Madhya Pradesh High Court held that a major woman has the right to live according to her own wishes and cannot be unlawfully detained by police. However, the Court clarified that she cannot reside as the wife of a man who is below the legally prescribed marriageable age.
The Bombay High Court ruled that an adult woman has the right to make her own life choices, even if her family disagrees. The court granted protection to a pregnant woman who wished to marry her partner despite family threats.
