Today,The Supreme Court granted a two-week extension to complete Maharashtra local body elections after considering the State Election Commission’s request. A bench of CJI Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi approved the plea seeking extra time beyond January 31.
The Supreme Court has ruled that election results in 57 Maharashtra local bodies breaching the 50% quota cap will depend on its final judgement. The court has warned that polls held against the law may be cancelled.
The Supreme Court will hear Uddhav Thackeray faction’s plea on November 12 against the Election Commission’s decision granting Shiv Sena’s name and “bow and arrow” symbol to Eknath Shinde. Kapil Sibal warned that any delay could cause “irreparable harm” ahead of 2026 polls.
