Chief Justice of India Surya Kant said the legal system must serve those in real need, not just people who can afford justice. Addressing law students in Patna, he urged young lawyers to bend the arc of justice towards the poor and voiceless.
CJI B R Gavai stressed that litigation alone cannot deliver justice and urged wider use of legal aid and mediation. With 5.36 crore cases pending, SCBA president Vikas Singh said mediation could drastically reduce India’s backlog.
On 9th May 2025, the National Legal Services Authority announced Justice Surya Kant as the new Executive Chairman, effective 14th May. Nominated by President Droupadi Murmu, he succeeds Justice B.R. Gavai. Justice Kant is recognized for advocating legal aid and reforms, aiming to enhance access to justice for the disadvantaged in India.

The Indian Law Firms Pro Bono Club (ILFPC) was established to address the shortage of pro bono services, with prominent law firms joining forces. This initiative aims to transform individual efforts into a unified institutional obligation, bridging the gap in pro bono services in India.
