The CBI has asked a Delhi court for extra time to confirm the status of accused persons in the land-for-jobs case involving Lalu Prasad Yadav and his family. The court will now hear the matter again on December 10.

A Delhi court rejected Lalu Prasad Yadav and Rabri Devi’s request to halt day-to-day hearings in the IRCTC scam case, citing Supreme Court orders for speedy trials of MPs and MLAs. The case involves alleged bribes of land and shares for hotel contracts during Yadav’s tenure as Railway Minister.

Today, On 18th July, The Supreme Court refused to stay the trial court proceedings against Lalu Yadav in the land-for-jobs case but granted him exemption from personal appearance, while directing the Delhi High Court to speed up hearing his plea to quash the FIR.
The Supreme Court questioned if a criminal conviction can automatically bar someone from forming a political party, calling it a key constitutional issue under Article 19. The case, based on a 2017 PIL, challenges loopholes allowing convicted leaders to still head parties.
