Eden Gardens Not a Public Space, Rules Calcutta High Court in Landmark 1996 World Cup Tax Dispute

The Calcutta High Court ruled that Eden Gardens Stadium is not a public space, dismissing the Kolkata Municipal Corporation’s Rs 51 lakh tax demand on the Cricket Association of Bengal. The judgment clarified that public access must be unrestricted for a place to qualify as a public space, which Eden Gardens does not meet.
