Justice G.R. Swaminathan heard contempt proceedings over alleged non-compliance in the Thirupparankundram Deepam matter, with officials saying prohibitory orders were only to control crowds. The Madras High Court granted time to the District Collector to file an additional affidavit and adjourned the case to March 2.
The Tamil Nadu DGP informed the Supreme Court that criminal cases have been registered against protesters for allegedly making caste and religion-based defamatory remarks against Justice G R Swaminathan. The action follows the Madras High Court judge’s order allowing the lighting of Karthigai Deepam on Thirupparankundram hill.
The Madras High Court directed police to seize a book carrying offensive remarks and objectionable depictions against a sitting judge. Planned for a city book fair on January 8, it allegedly targeted Justice G. R. Swaminathan, the petitioner said.
In Tamil Nadu’s Deepam controversy, Madras HC Justice G R Swaminathan expressed personal disappointment and humorously noted his fascination with the issue. At a book launch for Kambar and Vaishnavam, he remarked, “Time for lighting the Deepam on Deepathoon will come.”
Quoting Prophet Mohammed’s teaching on timely payment, Justice G R Swaminathan directed the Madurai Corporation to clear Rs 13.05 lakh in pending fees of its former lawyer. The Court also criticised the practice of paying huge amounts to senior counsels while delaying dues of working advocates.

Former Madhya Pradesh High Court judge KK Trivedi stated that the Opposition’s move to impeach Madras High Court judge Justice G R Swaminathan is either politically motivated or intended to influence a favorable ruling. He warned that such actions undermine judicial independence and credibility.
Madras High Court said the contempt action against S Vanchinathan was based on his social media interview, not his petition to the CJI. The bench stressed it aimed to uphold judicial integrity, not silence criticism.
