NEW DELHI: Today, 6th May: The Supreme Court of India came down heavily on a Deputy Collector from Andhra Pradesh, who had earlier served as a Tahsildar in Guntur district. The officer was found guilty of acting against the orders of the Andhra Pradesh High Court by forcibly evicting slum-dwellers and demolishing their huts. This action led to the displacement of several poor families and raised serious concerns about contempt of court and abuse of power.
Justice Surya Kant of the Supreme Court commented on Maharashtra’s OBC reservation system, likening it to a crowded train compartment, stopping new arrivals. During hearings on delayed local elections, he stressed the need for inclusivity in reservations and identified the need for more classification within OBCs to genuinely support the truly disadvantaged groups.
Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna emphasized the significance of mediation as a preferred alternative to traditional court litigation during the National Mediation Conference 2025. He highlighted that mediation addresses complexities, fosters relationships, and facilitates a holistic approach to conflict resolution. The newly launched Mediation Association aims to promote this practice across India, especially in rural areas.
The Supreme Court addressed petitions alleging contempt against Gujarat authorities for continuing construction despite an order halting demolitions of Muslim structures in Gir Somnath. Senior Advocate Sanjay Hegde raised concerns over a new boundary wall, while the Gujarat government denied illegal construction. The case is set for a detailed hearing soon.
At NALSA’s 30th anniversary, Justice BR Gavai emphasized India’s unity and the need for legal awareness among communities, particularly in conflict zones like Manipur. He highlighted crucial initiatives for victim support and rehabilitation. Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal stressed the importance of customized legal support and community involvement for effective justice delivery.
At the Western Regional Conference, Justice BR Gavai emphasized the need for citizens to understand their constitutional rights for effective enforcement. He highlighted NALSA’s commitment to providing legal aid and supporting marginalized groups, including efforts to reduce prison overcrowding. Justice Surya Kant reiterated that justice is a fundamental right, not charity.
The Supreme Court of India expressed strong discontent towards an Andhra Pradesh official for breaching a 2013 court order banning slum demolitions in Hyderabad. Despite legal pleas citing family responsibilities, the court emphasized the importance of adhering to judicial directives and warned against undermining its authority amidst criticism from BJP leaders regarding perceived judicial overreach.
Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna has recommended Justice BR Gavai as his successor, with Gavai expected to take oath on May 14. He will become the second Dalit CJI, following Justice KG Balakrishnan in 2007. Gavai, a Supreme Court judge, has contributed to significant judgments, including demonetization and electoral bonds.
