Chief Justice of India Surya Kant said the Constitution belongs equally to all citizens, not just a privileged class. He warned that well-off cosmopolitans using costly legal processes and top lawyers to gain unintended outcomes undermines constitutional fairness.
CJI Surya Kant Speaking at the 8th Dinkar Memorial Lecture organised by Respect India expressed concern over growing reports of artificial intelligence systems showing bias against poor and vulnerable communities, stressing that equality, dignity, and fairness remain essential pillars of a humane and balanced society.
The Supreme Court of India questioned if the Enforcement Directorate was alleging a breakdown of constitutional machinery in West Bengal over the Kolkata I-PAC raid involving Mamata Banerjee. “We hope you are not arguing ‘breakdown of constitutional machinery’,” Justice N. V. Anjaria told SG Tushar Mehta during the hearing.
The Madras High Court Madurai Bench criticised politically motivated appointments of public prosecutors, warning it weakens justice delivery and harms victims. Justice B. Pugalendhi said selections based on allegiance over merit compromise competence, leaving litigants to suffer and undermining the administration of justice.
The Supreme Court said it will ask the National Judicial Academy to prepare a pan-India report on how courts should record observations in sexual assault cases. The top court also indicated it will set aside the Allahabad High Court order criticised for insensitive remarks that could have a chilling effect on victims.
