The Madras High Court (Madurai Bench) acquitted a woman earlier sentenced to life imprisonment for her husband’s murder, ruling circumstantial evidence was insufficient and rejecting the claim that marriage alone proved she was present during the incident.
The Punjab and Haryana High Court acquitted Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in the murder case of journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati, setting aside his life sentence awarded by a special court in 2019 after the division bench allowed appeals against the conviction.
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court of India upheld that if an alleged rape victim refuses to undergo a medical examination, it can lead to negative inferences against their claims. The bench, comprising Justice Surya Kant and Justice NK Singh, made this important observation while hearing an appeal filed by the State of Himachal Pradesh. The appeal was against a High Court judgment that had acquitted an accused in a rape case.
