Today, On 19th December, The Karnataka High Court dismissed a petition challenging the COFEPOSA detention of Kannada actress Ranya Rao in connection with a gold smuggling case reported in March this year.
The Supreme Court remarked that stone pelting in Jammu and Kashmir is “not a very ordinary action” while hearing Shabir Shah’s bail plea. The court asked him to approach the J&K government for his detention order as NIA seeks more time to respond.
Today, On 27th June, The Supreme Court set aside the preventive detention of a law student from Madhya Pradesh, calling it “wholly untenable.” The bench ordered his immediate release, stating that the grounds for detention did not meet legal requirements.
The Supreme Court confirmed Felix Jerald’s bail and criticized the Madras High Court’s condition mandating the closure of his YouTube channel, stating it was “unwarranted and extraneous.” The ruling emphasized that while the closure requirement is lifted, other bail conditions remain in place following Jerald’s arrest linked to a controversial interview.
Today(12th Sept), The Supreme Court ruled that individuals detained under preventive laws must receive all essential materials relied upon by authorities for their detention. However, documents referenced only in passing need not be provided.
