Today, On 5th November, The Supreme Court ruled that not all private properties qualify as community resources under Article 39(b) for State acquisition. Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud led the majority opinion, stating that properties must meet specific criteria. The court’s decision reflects differing judicial views on property rights and State authority, with three judgments delivered in total.
CJI Chandrachud Today (Sept 6) dismissed the plea of Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, challenging a Calcutta High Court order. Ghosh had sought to intervene in a public interest litigation (PIL) that alleges financial irregularities at the college during his tenure. The CJI ruled that, as an accused individual, Ghosh does not have the legal standing to join the PIL, particularly because the High Court is already supervising the investigation into the allegations.

The Supreme Court Today (Aug 30) bid farewell to Justice Hima Kohli, who is retiring on September 1. During the farewell, Chief Justice of India (CJI) shared a light-hearted moment: in the morning, the first five judges visited his chamber for a collegium discussion. Justice Kohli humorously noted that they were there to fill her vacancy and hoped it would be a woman judge. Reflecting on her time at the Court, Justice Kohli described joining the Chief Justice as a stroke of luck, especially as a batchmate.

The Supreme Court’s recent ruling stated royalty is not a tax, and states sought retrospective application, which the Centre opposed.
