The Supreme Court set aside an Allahabad High Court order refusing to suspend a convict’s sentence, stating, “Such errors arise in the High Court when settled law is not applied properly,” days after criticising another HC judge in a civil dispute case.
The Supreme Court of India reprimanded the Uttar Pradesh Police for filing a criminal case in a civil property dispute, imposing a Rs. 50,000 fine on involved officers. The court emphasized that civil matters should remain non-criminal and criticized the misuse of criminal law. The case involved Rikhab and Sadhna Birani amid prior magistrate rejections.
MUMBAI: The Bombay High Court, on Tuesday, criticized the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for initiating a money laundering investigation against a real estate developer without proper grounds. The court imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh each on the ED and the complainant, asserting that central agencies cannot misuse their authority to harass citizens.
Today (28th March): The Madras High Court expressed grave concern over advocates aiding clients in forcefully acquiring properties, deeming it damaging to the legal profession’s reputation. Justice Venkatesh summoned the involved advocates, police inspector, and property purchaser to address a complaint, emphasizing the need for stricter measures to combat such conduct and asserting the court’s authority.
