NALSA has launched a “Planecrash legal support helpdesk” in response to the Air India crash in Ahmedabad, providing legal aid and emotional support to affected families. Guided by Chief Justice B R Gavai and Justice Surya Kant, the initiative addresses legal formalities and offers mental health assistance to help families cope with their loss.
CJI BR Gavai defended the strict criteria for impeaching Indian judges, stating such safeguards are essential. He emphasised that they are necessary to protect the judiciary’s independence and prevent misuse of the removal process.
CJI Gavai stressed the transformative role of technology in improving access to justice, saying, “Technology must support, not supplant judicial judgment,” and emphasised that it should assist, not replace, individual case analysis and reasoning.
CJI B.R. Gavai expressed strong displeasure over a protocol lapse during his first visit to Maharashtra after taking charge, stating, “If it were someone else, Article 142 would have been invoked immediately.”
The Supreme Court of India declined to urgently hear a petition seeking an FIR against Judge Yashwant Varma over credible cash row claims. Petitioners stress the necessity of criminal proceedings, citing a favorable inquiry outcome. Despite the former Chief Justice’s recommendation for resignation, the Judge has not stepped down, intensifying the call for accountability.
