The Chhattisgarh High Court granted bail to former CMO Deputy Secretary Saumya Chaurasia in cases filed by the ED and EOW in the alleged Rs 2,883 crore liquor scam. The Court cited delay in trial, parity with co-accused, and substantial completion of investigation.
The Supreme Court said it will hear Chhattisgarh’s plea against bail granted to Chaitanya Baghel in alleged liquor scam cases. CJI Surya Kant-led bench noted ED’s challenge and witness reluctance after Mahesh Jethmalani were concerns, fixing hearing next week.
Congress MLA and former Chhattisgarh excise minister Kawasi Lakhma was released from Raipur Central Jail a day after the Supreme Court granted him interim bail in cases linked to the alleged liquor ‘scam’. Arrested by the ED and ACB/EOW, Lakhma said he has full faith in the judiciary and will continue to fight for tribal and farmers’ rights.

The Court imposed strict conditions, including a ban on entering Chhattisgarh except for court hearings and restrictions on public statements.
The Supreme Court of India will hear over 40 petitions linked to the Chhattisgarh liquor scam on January 28, including multiple bail pleas. The hearing will also cover the Enforcement Directorate’s challenge to the bail granted to Chaitanya Baghel.
The Supreme Court has deferred hearing on the Chhattisgarh government’s appeal challenging bail granted to Chaitanya Baghel in the alleged liquor scam cases. The bail was earlier granted by the High Court citing parity with co-accused and prolonged custody.
The Supreme Court raised concerns that transferring the liquor scam trial from Uttar Pradesh to Chhattisgarh could unfairly affect co-accused based in UP. The Court warned that such a move may create conflicting claims and cause “great hardship” to other accused persons.
The Chhattisgarh High Court criticised the ED and EOW-ACB for a selective and inconsistent investigation in the multi-crore liquor scam, flagging unequal application of law while granting bail to Chaitanya Baghel.
The ACB/EOW has alleged in its chargesheet that Chaitanya Baghel, son of former Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel, received Rs 200–250 crore from the liquor scam. The agency claims he played a key role in managing and protecting the syndicate during the Congress government’s tenure.
The Supreme Court has adjourned till January the plea filed by Chaitanya Baghel, son of former Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel, challenging his arrest in the alleged liquor scam. The Court said the matter cannot be heard piecemeal and will take it up for detailed hearing in the first week of January.
