The Supreme Court of India refused to entertain a PIL seeking exclusion of caste enumeration from the 2027 census, observing that decisions regarding caste-based census operations fall within the government’s policy domain and do not warrant judicial interference by the Court.
Big regional parties like the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) in Bihar, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in Tamil Nadu, and even segments of the Congress, orally supported the caste census, which built a steady pressure on the pressure on the Union government.
Today, On 30th April, The Modi government has approved a caste-based census as part of the national population count. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said, “Data will be collected in a transparent & structured manner” during the once-in-a-decade exercise.
