CJI-designate Justice Surya Kant urged Indian courts to rely on Swadeshi jurisprudence instead of foreign rulings, stressing the need for a home-grown legal framework. He said Indian judgments must reflect the nation’s constitutional values and judicial maturity.
Ahead of taking oath as the 53rd Chief Justice of India, Justice Surya Kant said social media trolls do not influence judges who decide only on facts and law. He reaffirmed his focus on reducing case pendency and strengthening mediation as a key reform tool.
A convict in the 2011 Keenan-Ruben murder case has died after waiting nine years for his appeal to be heard by the Bombay High Court. This comes despite repeated Supreme Court directions urging the High Court to decide the case within three months.

Today, On 5th May, The Supreme Court strongly criticised the Jharkhand High Court for delaying verdicts in criminal cases and directed all High Courts to submit status reports, stating, “This cannot be allowed to happen in a judicial system.”

On Monday(22nd July), the Supreme Court expressed concern over the Patna High Court’s directive to conclude a criminal trial within one year, citing it as unrealistic due to Bihar’s trial court backlog. Justices Abhay S Oka and Augustine George Masih noted that the order lacked consideration of the extensive case pendency.
