NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court of India on Wednesday (29th Jan) directed hospitals, including AIIMS New Delhi, to regularise the period of absence of doctors who had participated in protests against the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata. The decision came after a doctors’ association pointed out that while some hospitals had regularised the absence based on an earlier court order, others, including AIIMS Delhi, were treating it as leave.
The Supreme Court criticized the West Bengal government for not establishing a Municipal Building Tribunal to address illegal constructions on enemy property in Kolkata. Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan directed immediate demolitions of unauthorized structures, warning of potential contempt actions if compliance is not met by the state within two weeks.
The Supreme Court will hear a US creditor’s appeal against an NCLAT judgment on September 17. The judgment halted insolvency proceedings against BYJU’s and approved its Rs 158.9 crore settlement with the BCCI. The court has agreed to hear another related plea on the same date, following multiple requests to expedite the hearing.
