The Delhi High Court has directed the Delhi Government to grant law researchers the enhanced pay of Rs 80,000 per month with retrospective effect from October 1, 2022. The Bench held that the decision on remuneration lies within the powers of the Chief Justice under Article 229 of the Constitution.
The Delhi High Court asked the state to explain why law researchers’ pay hike is only from 2025 despite earlier approval from October 2022. Judges reminded the govt that past hikes were also given retrospectively.
Justice Navin Chawla of the Delhi High Court recused himself from a petition by 13 law researchers seeking a salary increase from ₹65,000 to ₹80,000, effective October 2022, due to a conflict of interest. He is the second judge to step aside for similar reasons, as delays in implementation persist.

Haryana has introduced new rules providing Rs 45,000–Rs 50,000 monthly for retired Chief Justices and Judges, and their spouses, for domestic help and drivers. An additional Rs 15,000 covers communication and security services. Benefits are available only if similar services aren’t received from other roles, enhancing existing post-retirement allowances.
