NEW DELHI: As per the court’s calendar, the winter vacation of the Supreme Court will begin on December 20, 2025. Regular benches will not sit during this period, except for matters listed before vacation benches, if any, subject to urgency.
The court is scheduled to briefly reconvene on Monday, December 22, 2025, after which the next effective date of hearing for listed matters would be April 2026, following the conclusion of subsequent court recesses.
During court proceedings, CJI Surya Kant, speaking in a lighter vein, addressed lawyers seeking urgent mentioning of cases during the vacation period. The Chief Justice remarked that:
Anyone who wishes to mention a matter must give a note of urgency along with an undertaking that they will appear on December 22, 2025 (Monday). I will sit for you — and then the next date will be April, 2026.
The comment, though humorous, highlighted the court’s firm approach towards discouraging non-essential urgent listings during vacation and ensuring judicial time is reserved for genuinely pressing matters.
