New Delhi: The Supreme Court rejected a review petition filed by the Vedanta group concerning the closure of its copper smelting plant in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu.
Previously, on February 29, the court had dismissed Vedanta’s request to reopen the facility, which has been shut since May 2018 due to pollution concerns.
This closure followed a tragic incident where 13 people died during police action to disperse a protest against the plant’s alleged pollution.
A bench consisting of Chief Justice D. Y. Chandrachud (now retired), along with Justices J. B. Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, also denied Vedanta’s application to have the review petition heard in open court.
As noted in their order dated October 22, The bench stated,
“Having perused the review petitions, there is no error apparent on the face of the record. No case for review under Order XLVII Rule 1 of the Supreme Court Rules 2013 has been established. The review petitions are, therefore, dismissed,”
