The Supreme Court Today (May 6th) granted bail to Umar Ansari, son of late gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, in a criminal case registered against him during the 2022 assembly elections for alleged violation of the model code of conduct.

A bench of Justices Hrishikesh Roy and PK Mishra directed Umar to appear before the trial court in connection with the case.
On January 25, the Supreme Court had granted him protection from arrest in this case. Previously, the Allahabad High Court, on December 19, had rejected Ansari’s anticipatory bail application, stating that given the facts and circumstances of the case, “the offence is made out.”
An FIR was lodged on March 4, 2022, at Kotwali police station in Mau district against Abbas Ansari, who was the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) candidate from Mau Sadar seat, along with Umar Ansari and 150 unidentified individuals.
The FIR alleged that on March 3, 2022, at Pahadpura ground, Abbas Ansari, Umar Ansari, and organizer Mansoor Ahmad Ansari, during a public meeting, called for settling a score with the Mau administration. The case pertained to a violation of the election code of conduct.
Mukhtar Ansari, a jailed gangster-turned-politician, died of cardiac arrest at a hospital in Banda, Uttar Pradesh, on March 28.
PREVIOUSLY IN APEX COURT
The Supreme Court, on 25th Jan, granted interim relief to Umar Ansari, son of gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, from arrestin connection with a case alleging violation of election codes.
Umar Ansari, who has been under scrutiny for his alleged involvement in breaching electoral conduct, received a temporary reprieve from the apex court. The case, which has garnered considerable attention, revolves around accusations of Umar Ansari’s participation in activities that contravene the established norms and regulations during election campaigns.
A bench of justices Hrishikesh Roy and Prashant Kumar Mishra directed not to take coercive steps against Umar Ansari till further orders.
The decision to grant interim relief to Umar Ansari is seen as a significant moment in the ongoing discourse about electoral integrity and legal accountability in India.
The court also asked the Uttar Pradesh government to file a reply to Umar Ansari’s plea challenging the Allahabad High Court order.
In December 2023 the Allahabad High Court rejected Umar’s anticipatory bail plea in connection with a case against him for the alleged violation of the model code of conduct during the 2022 assembly elections.
The FIR was lodged in March 2022 at Kotwali police station in Mau district against Abbas Ansari, Umar Ansari, and others.
Earlier, the Supreme Court on October 11, granted anticipatory bail to Umar Ansari, son of Mukhtar Ansari in connection with a case relating to a property dispute case.
The Supreme Court’s decision to grant relief, albeit temporarily, to Umar Ansari is not an indication of the final verdict but rather a pause as the legal proceedings continue. It allows for a more detailed examination of the allegations and the evidence presented.
